Do I Care About What God Cares About?

My friend Marjorie recently wrote to me about an incident from the lives of two great men. A. B. Simpson, founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination, once had as a house guest F. B. Meyer, great Bible scholar of that generation.

On the first morning, Dr. Meyer dressed early and tiptoed downstairs to have a quiet time with the Lord. But in the hallway, he looked through a half-open door and there was his host, also up and sitting at his study desk. Dr. Meyer stood still.

As he watched, Dr. Simpson spun a world globe, put his finger on a spot, and prayed. Then he spun it again, put his finger on another spot, and prayed. And then, as Meyer watched unnoticed, Simpson leaned forward, took the big globe in his arms, hugged it, and began to cry.

Marjorie wrote, "I have cried many times over conditions my own children have been in. But how many times have I cared enough to weep about conditions His children were in?"

The Holy Spirit desires to give us prayer burdens we are to carry as faithfully as Paul carried the Galatians. Paul said, "My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you" (Galatians 4:19). Just as a child is born only after his mother gives birth, so also spiritual life comes after the "pains of childbirth."

To give spiritual life to another requires that we seek to have a passionate concern for that person.

Jesus, please help me to care enough to weep over what makes You weep. I want to welcome the concern for others You want to give me.

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion" (Colossians 3:12).
